(July 29, 2009)—Pharmaceutical Institute, a leading provider of specialized training solutions for the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, today announced the release of a new e-course titled, Practice Management. The course is the newest addition to the company’s Managed Markets Excellence™ series. The new Practice Management e-course provides a comprehensive overview of the management structure and economics of a physician practice, including those that utilize specialty products.

“Physician practices are under increasing financial pressure in the current reimbursement environment,” says Garry O’Grady, General Manager of the Pharmaceutical Institute. “It is important that pharmaceutical manufacturers fully understand the economic drivers within a physician practice, as well as the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders, in order to appropriately position their products.”

The Practice Management e-course, developed in partnership with subject-matter experts from Campbell Alliance, will provide team members with the background necessary to understand the financial management of a physician practice. The e-course will provide team members with an understanding of the various aspects of practice management, including 

  • The roles and priorities of practice managers—including their role in negotiating and maintaining contracts with various entities (e.g., MCOs, drug manufacturers)
  • Basic methods of assessing the financial health of a physician practice
  • Implementation of the “buy-and-bill” model for specialty products
  • Key external trends affecting practice managers (e.g., e-prescribing, electronic medical record (EMR) systems, impact of Medicaid and managed Medicaid)
